OLD FIELDS IN PEACE AND WAR: REBECCA VAN METER’S DIARY 1855–1865
Printed as a true copy including punctuation and spelling of the available typescript, the editors have added pictures, maps, Jacob and Tabitha Van Meter genealogy, Hardy County Civil War Time Line and an index of names to enhance the value for today’s
readers. This is a significant addition to the written history of Hardy County and the South Branch Valley of the Potomac in West Virginia and indeed to the broader fi eld of civil war history. Rebecca saw from her windows the movement of troops up and down the Valley. Her recording in her diary of this activity and of her friend and neighbor, Hanson McNeill, and his McNeill’s Rangers is particularly important information for historians.
