Old Fields In Peace & War: Rebecca Van Meter’s Diary 1855 – 1865
Printed as a true copy including punctuation and spelling of the available transcript, the editors have added pictures, maps, Jacob & Tabitha Van Meter’s geneology, Hardy County Civil War Time line, and an index of names to enhance the value for the reader.
This is a significant addition to the written history of Hardy County & the South Branch Valley of the Potomac in West Virginia and indeed to the broader field of Civil War History.
From her window Rebecca saw the movements of the troops up and down the valley. Her recordings in her diary of this activity and of her friend and neighbor Hanson McNeil and his McNeil Rangers is particularly important information for historians.
